Sonoma County Library

Millie Howie Courtyard

Millie Howie, 1922-2011Millie Howie (1922-2011) founded the Sonoma County Wine Library and helped build the Healdsburg Regional Library. After a pioneering career in San Francisco broadcasting, she became one of the first public relations professionals in the North Coast wine industry. She helped found the Russian River Wine Road (now simply The Wine Road) out of which came the impetus for the Sonoma County Wine Library. She worked tirelessly to make the new Healdsburg Library building a reality and with it the Wine Library. She was a columnist for the Healdsburg Tribune for over 30 years, wrote for dozens of wine and other publications, edited and published her own magazine, authored several books. As a Library Commissioner she helped steer the library through troubled times.

Help us honor Millie

We have already honored Millie by renaming the wine library to The Sonoma County Wine Library, Millie Howie, Founder. Now we propose to take an underused patio area on Piper Street near the Wine Library and make it into a vibrant and lovely space with a shade cover, seating and landscaping. The finished Millie Howie Courtyard will provide a space for library patrons to enjoy a shaded leafy read, celebrating Millie’s commitment to libraries.
